How to Protect Your Pool During a Storm (Before, During & After)

Ohio storms can hit fast and hard. This blog outlines simple, effective steps pool owners can take to protect their pool equipment, water quality, and surrounding area before, during, and after a storm — all with expert advice from Inception Custom Pools.

How to Protect Your Pool During a Storm (Before, During & After)

Why Storm Prep Matters for Pool Owners

Severe weather is part of life in Ohio — and if you own a pool, you know just how messy things can get afterward. From debris and dirty water to damaged equipment, failing to prep your pool before a storm can cost time and money.

At Inception Custom Pools, we help homeowners in Columbus, Cincinnati, and surrounding areas keep their pools protected and storm-ready year-round.

What to Do Before the Storm

1. Turn Off Power to Pool Equipment

Shut off power to pumps, heaters, lights, and automation systems at the breaker. This prevents electrical damage from power surges or flooding.

2. Secure Loose Items

Remove or tie down:

  • Pool furniture
  • Toys and floats
  • Planters, umbrellas, and grillsHigh winds can turn these into dangerous projectiles.

3. Lower the Water Level Slightly (if needed)

Heavy rain can cause pools to overflow. Lower the water level by a few inches, but don't drain it completely — this can cause structural damage.

4. Add Algaecide or Shock

Treat the water beforehand to prevent post-storm algae growth. Run your pump for several hours to properly circulate the chemicals.

5. Cover or Uncover?

If you have a safety cover, leave it in place. If you have a solar cover or tarp, remove it to prevent damage from wind.

What to Do During the Storm

  • Stay indoors. Never attempt to secure equipment or touch electrical systems during a storm.
  • Keep the pool area closed. Fencing and locked gates help keep people (especially kids) safe during bad weather.

What to Do After the Storm

1. Inspect the Pool & Equipment

Check for:

  • Floating debris
  • Cracks or shifting around the pool edge
  • Water in your pump or electrical boxes

Call a professional if anything looks off.

2. Skim, Brush & Vacuum

Remove debris quickly to prevent stains, clogs, and water imbalance. A thorough cleaning helps your system recover faster.

3. Test & Rebalance Water Chemistry

Rainwater and runoff can affect your pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels. Test and adjust as needed — consider shocking the pool to eliminate contaminants.

4. Check Filter & Pump System

Backwash or clean filters, clear pump baskets, and restart your system once everything is dry and secure.
